Airborne Solitudes

Exploration of the solo flute repertoire

Photo of Jeffrey Stonehouse playing the flute

Cloistered because of COVID-19, impossible to do chamber music or orchestra. The perfect time to explore in detail works for solo flute(s) with and without electro. Inspired in some way by COVID-19 and the idea that the invisible carried by the wind can be so powerful (and deadly!) This project will bring together pieces inspired by wind and wings (the plague) - a way to celebrate the fact that COVID-19 allows me to take time to explore these important works of the solo flute repertoire.

The project's repertoire includes works from the international repertoire for solo flute:

  • Elizabeth Brown - Arcana for solo flute and electronics (USA)
  • Kaija Saariaho - Terrestre for solo flute and chamber ensemble (Finlande)
  • Toru Takemitsu - Air for solo flute (Japon)
  • J. S. Bach/arr. Salvatore Sciarrino - Toccata et fugue in d minor BWV 565

Canadian and Quebec works:

  • Gilles Tremblay - Envol
  • James O’Callaghan - Into Sections for flutist (picc, C, alto, bass) and electronics
  • James O’Callaghan - Doubt Is a Way of Knowing for solo flute and electronics
  • Sonia Paço-Rocchia - Fleur d’ancre for contrabass flute and electronics
